Chaplains attend Chile workshop
Fr Chad Boulton, Fr Oswald Mc Bride and Fr Philip Rozario - with Abbot President Fr Richard Yeo and two other monks - attended a workshop for monastic chaplains this July in Chile. The Santiago-based course, organised by the Manquehue Apostolic Movement, explored both the theory and practice of Tutoria - spiritual accompaniment of younger students by their elders. Participants met students and staff of San Anselmo, San Lorenzo and San Benito Colleges, joined students taking part in two days of building emergency housing for earthquake victims, and attended lectio groups comprising final year students from San Benito. St. Laurence's Day included the Patronal School Mass at San Lorenzo. Abbot Richard had earlier blessed a statue of St Laurence which had previously been given to San Lorenzo as a token of our common patron. After the workshop, Frs Chad and Philip visited the Manquehue House of Formation in Patagonia.
Student retreat expands prayer horizons
On May 27, over 100 Year 10 students went on retreat to Osmotherley - an Ampleforth-run parish 25 miles away. The Abbey also cares for the nearby shrine of Our Lady of Mount Grace where the students assembled. Frs. Chad, Francis Dobson, Alexander, Hugh, Peter and Br Philip were helped by College lay staff and by several mothers who organised the barbeque lunch.
The day focused on introducing students in rotating groups thoughout the day to four kinds of prayer: Rosary, Lectio Divina, Stations of the Cross and Eucharistic Adoration. The day concluded with Mass in the nearby ruins of Mount Grace Priory, a medieval Charterhouse.
Buffet celebration for Mass servers
On May 12, a buffet supper in the Main Hall marked the Community's thanks to those students who regularly serve at the weekday Conventual Mass. Those attending represented all year-groups in the College and a range of School Houses. Some of those soon to leave the College have been weekday servers for four years or more. Fr Abbot said he hoped they would experience the spiritual benefits of their generosity, before inviting them to the 'physical benefits' of the celebration buffet.
Bishop - God's love is 'our true ID'
Whatever else changes in our life, God's unchanging, unconditional, love for each of us is the true foundation of our identity. Preaching in the Abbey Church at the Confirmation of students of Ampleforth College on April 24 and 25, Bishop Terence Drainey reflected on the many diverse facets of personal identity, reminding his hearers that such apparently dependable realities as work, friendships, health and status change with time. The graces received through the Sacrament of Confirmation are a further pledge of God's utter faithfulness - which we nevertheless are free either to accept or reject.
Ampleforth at Cambridge
On Trinity Sunday, several monks from Ampleforth and St. Benets Hall, Oxford, sang Vespers to a capacity congregation in Magdalene College Chapel, Cambridge. This revives a tradition of such annual visits on alternate years. The College - founded in 1452 as Buckingham Hall - was set-up to educate monks from nearby abbeys. Fr Prior gave an address before a dinner at the College. The occasion was hosted by Professor Eamon Duffy of Magdalene.
