Sights and Sounds
The gifts of the senses have been regarded with suspicion by some very holy people. But for some, they have been a channel of glory and food for faith.
St Antony of Egypt said he didn't miss the consolation of books because he had nature around him which spoke to him more clearly of the Creator than any book. St John of the Cross would look at the landscape through a small window to avoid being overwhelmed by the wonder of what he saw of God's work. And even the work of men could lift the spirits. The apostles marvelled at the beauty of the architecture of the Temple, and the psalms speak of the joy of approaching the city of Jerusalem with its gleaming temple, towers and palaces.
And music is completely at home in heaven! The angels are described either as armies (hosts) or as choirs. The natural mode for praise is song, and all the psalms were written as musical pieces. Some say music is the language the soul understands.
With all this in mind we humbly present to you these collections...
